Welcome

Amber Stewart was born and raised in Nashville, TN, by parents who barely tolerated country music. After eight years in New York — where she earned a B.F.A. in Writing from Pratt Institute and an M.S.Ed. from Long Island University — she returned to Nashville, where she completed an M.A. in English at Belmont University, bought a house, planted a garden, and started fertility treatments.

Then Tennessee's legislature made it clear her family wasn't welcome anymore.

In January 2024, Amber and her wife Jamie left Nashville for Montevideo, Uruguay, where they have been figuring out what home means when the one you built is no longer safe to tend. She is the founder and editor of Unbordered Magazine, a literary publication documenting the stories of Americans living outside the United States.

In the Garden: An Almanac for Uprooting, her debut memoir-in-essays, is forthcoming June 2026.
